I’ll let the wonderful flyer (thanks, Andrew!) explain all the details. I’d just like to add that I’m very much looking forward to this date. I’ve been trying to set up (or at least been dreaming of) a dancefloor jazz night in Belgium, and this event might be a big step forward. I’ve been to The Jazz Meet in London three times already (two of which I DJ’d myself) and I’ve always had a great time listening to great music, surrounded by great people. I’m pretty sure Rob & Jarred will bring plenty of superb jazz tunes, so if you are even remotely interested in jazz music, mark the 25th in your agenda.

About one year ago I made my first trip to London, where I guested at The Jazz Meet, an incredible weekly event with a live band and the finest jazz DJ’s in a beautiful venue in East London. A small selection of DJ’s who have DJ’ed at The Jazz Meet: Nik Weston (Mukatsuku), Raggy (Off Limit), Adrian Leach and Mark Taylor (Happy Jazz), Dom Servini. Needless to say that I feel quite honored to return to London this march to play another guest DJ set, and I’ll make sure to make a selection of some of my finest jazz tunes.

Jasper from the Amsterdam based Jazz Diggers recently auctioned a few original proof prints on ebay, with the following text: “Phonogram was a parent company which owned and distributed several record companies including Philips, Fontana, Mercury, Decca, Brunswick, London. When the artwork for a record cover was made it was brought to a printer who did some test (proof) prints to see how it would come out. When approved by the record company more prints were made to use for the actual record covers. The proof prints were stored in the archives of the Phonogram company. When Phonogram ceased to exist in the early 1990’s the whole archive of proof prints was thrown away to be destroyed. At the time a former employee managed to save some of them which recently ended up in a local record store and that is how I obtained these.”

A few of these one-of-a-kind relics from the golden age of European jazz are now living a second life above my record cabinet. Beautiful, don’t you think?

One of the greatest joys found in collecting music is meeting likeminded people. People who care about the same music as you do, in the same way that you do. People who are always looking for new sounds and who always have a new track, artist or album for you to discover. One of those people that I met through collecting records is Jakob, aka AME (After Hours Crew). I first met Jakob at a record fair, and a while later I went to his house to trade some records. It was clear from the beginning that Jakob is a very friendly guy, passionate about soulful music, who is always willing to share his (incredible) musical knowledge. The man has hipped me to a lot of great stuff, and it’s not an understatement to say that AME is one of the most knowledgeable people in this country when it comes to rare groove, soul and funk from all over the world. His crates are deep and it’s fantastic that he shares them on his new blog Ridiculous Raw. Recently, Jakob asked me to do a guest feature for his website, and of course, I didn’t have to think twice. So I came up with a mix called ‘… and that’s Jazz!’, in which I share a few of my favorite modal, spiritual and fusion jazz tunes.
AME describes the mix as “heavyweight beyond a doubt going from modal to hard-bop with some Afro and a wee bit of fusion thrown in for good measure. One for the more matured ears. Bliss!” , so I can only say: go to Ridiculous Raw and check out the mix and follow Jakob’s blog and Mixcloud.

When I started this blog it was my intention to post only content that I produced by myself, be it mixes, charts and the occasional book review, because I didn’t want to make one of those blogs that just reblog everything. But recently, some very interesting projects/websites have popped up, so I thought I’d bundle them into one post, because I believe that they are really, really worth checking out:

+ The Word Is Bond - Jazz section
The Word Is Bond is a great website about hip-hop (where are the days…), but just last week they launched their Jazz section, which is curated by the mythical BlackClassical, who used to run the same-titled blog a few years back and recently regained notoriety by dropping a twelve (12!) hour long spiritual jazz mix on the internet.

+ Ridiculous Raw
When I started doing my monthly charts, I was inspired by BeatCharts, a short-lived Belgian digital and print magazine that focused on Funk, Soul, Hip Hop and Jazz. One of the people who had a monthly chart in the magazine was AME, from the legendary crate digging, beat making and dj team After Hours (Remember Barriosoundz, anyone?). Throughout the years, AME managed to put together an insanely deep collection of the finest in rare groove from all over the world. A few months back, he started his own blog, and I was very glad to see that he hosts regular charts with pictures and descriptions of very, very great records.

+ The Sound Of Belgium - Documentary
When I interviewed DJ Gibbe for my Popcorn documentary, he told me that he was once interviewed for a documentary about the history of Belgian music. It sounded interesting to me and I wondered why I hadn’t heard about the film before. Apparently, the film was still in the making and finally it’s finished now. I was lucky enough to win tickets to the avant-première this friday at the Ghent Film Festival (thanks Alex!) and I can’t wait to check it out. Director Jozef Devillé has interviewed many people on his search for the Belgian Sound, people who have been quintessential in the origins of genres like Belgian Popcorn, New Beat, Techno, etc. Although I’m not really into all of those styles of music, I have a big passion for DJ culture and especially for the stories behind it.

+ Who is Peter De Greef?
I just got back from the vinyl fair at the Jazz Brugge festival and next to a few jazz records that I picked up (and that will be featured on this blog sooner or later), I picked up a really nice book that I think should get some exposure. ‘Who is Peter De Greef’ is a book about Belgian illustrator Peter De Greef, who was very active in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s and who left behind a large oeuvre of beautiful designs for sheet music, gramophone records, advertising, magazines and so on. As an avid jazz fan and friend of Belgian jazz entrepreneur Felix-Robert Faecq, De Greef kind of became the house illustrator of the Belgian swing scene.
You can tell that the 164 page book by Christan Van den Broeck has been a labor of love. It’s a richly illustrated and well documented book, and the first publication on Van den Broeck’s own Belgatone publishing company. Order the book right here.
